Repeat the Sounding Joy

What were your Christmas traditions when you were growing up?

Did you celebrate Christmas Eve? Unwrap your presents Christmas morning? Did you get to be a part of a children’s Christmas program at church?

If you did participate in Christmas programs, take a minute to remember. I wonder how close our memories would line up. I was always in awe of the choir director. I would marvel at her precision, the way she waved her arms, and when she would sing, her mouth was in the shape of a perfect ‘O’. I can still imagine it. She was mesmerizing.

Do you remember the Saturday morning practices? Sitting in Sunday school rooms with VERY patient teachers as you waited for the processional.

Do you remember the manger set up in the sanctuary, surrounded by a cast of children representing Mary, Joseph, wise men, shepherds and angels?

Do you remember nervously practicing a line that you would deliver to the congregation? Or even part of a line – ours were often shared because there were so many children. Go to Luke, Chapter 2, and take time to read them again.

Do you remember your parents smiling and watching, grandparents waving, as you stood with the rest of your class to sing its designated song?

Do you remember the brown paper treat bags that you received at the end of the service? Always with peanuts, an apple and candy cane!

If you take the time, I think you will remember all of these things. These memories make us smile. They make us grateful for families that took us to church to be a part of a service to worship our Newborn King. Jesus our Savior was working in our little hearts then. Jesus our Savior is working in our hearts now.

I have included the lyrics to Joy to the World below. This time I did not put a link to any video. No need to click the words to take you to a recording done by a recent artist because I didn’t include it. Instead, I invite you to sing the lyrics and remember the feelings you had then, and the hope in this song, simple enough for a child to grasp, powerful enough to remain.

Merry Christmas to you as you reflect on the wonders of His love, again.
Shelli Muldoon

Joy to the World

Joy to the world! The Lord is come
Let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven, and heaven and nature sing

Joy to the world! the Savior reigns
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods
Rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat, repeat the sound in joy

No more let sin and sorrow grow
Nor thorns infest the ground
He comes to make
His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found
Far as the curse is found
Far as, far as the curse is found

He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of his love
And wonders of his love
And wonders and wonders of his love
